Your boating-safety course
starts with your state.
Need a “boating license”? Most states use an education certificate or boater card; some require a license or endorsement. Find the right starting point for where you’ll get on the water.
Where will you be boating?
Choose your operating state, even if you live somewhere else. For travel boating, check each destination’s visitor and certificate rules.

Three different things to check
The approved safety course
Check whether the state requires education for your age, boat or engine. An available online course is not automatically approved for every state.
The certificate, card or license
Some states accept course completion; others require a separate application. Check what to carry aboard and whether a state fee applies.
The club’s on-water checkout
Membership training, boat handling and local-waterway qualifications are separate from legal education. Ask the dock team what you must complete before reserving.
BoatUS Foundation course options
The BoatUS Foundation offers state-specific online safety courses, with approval and certificate requirements that vary. Its directory distinguishes approved courses from educational courses that do not satisfy a state requirement. Check your state page and the official authority before enrolling.
Free tuition does not necessarily mean every required card, application or state charge is free. Review the current course details before you register.

Does a course work in every state?
Do not assume that it does. Check the operating state’s current acceptance rules, visitor conditions, age restrictions and any local requirements.
Do boat club members still need education?
A membership does not automatically establish an exemption. Confirm the applicable state requirements and complete the club’s separate training and checkout.
How current are these pages?
Each guide names its source and review date. These are starting summaries, not a complete statement of every exception or a substitute for official requirements.
