Membership versus ownership calculator
Your membership estimate
Your ownership estimate
Using 18 outings per year, 6 boating months and 12 billed months. Costs and usage are held constant across 3 years. Zero outings produces no per-outing estimate.
How usage changes the picture
| Outings / year | Membership / outing | Ownership / outing |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | $0 | $0 |
| 12 | $0 | $0 |
| 24 | $0 | $0 |
| 36 | $0 | $0 |
Estimates only; not financial advice. Ownership includes purchase price minus resale (floored at zero), one-time purchase costs and recurring expenses. Financing input is interest only; principal is already represented in purchase minus resale. Returns on invested cash, inflation and unexpected damage are not modeled. This compares economic cost, not loan cash flow. Resale estimates determine depreciation, so depreciation is not added twice. Use includes the annual fuel estimates you entered; increased usage may change those costs. No universal break-even outing count can be inferred without variable cost and availability assumptions.
What does a boat club membership cost?
There is no verified nationwide Freedom or Carefree price that applies to every marina. Freedom describes an upfront initiation charge plus recurring dues; its pricing explanation links differences to local operating costs and plan choices. Build a complete quote, not just a monthly payment
Use the same comparison period and boating schedule for every offer. Keep optional purchases separate from mandatory costs. A low introductory payment can be misleading if the remaining commitment is long.
- Upfront: initiation fee, required onboarding charges and applicable tax. Record whether anything is refundable.
- Recurring: dues, billing months, annual fees, required coverage or other plan charges. Check any annual increases.
- Per outing: fuel, required cleaning or service charges if any, parking and your own trip expenses.
- Exit: minimum term, renewal, notice deadline, transfer rules and what happens to prepaid dues.
First-year cost versus cost per outing
First-year membership cost equals initiation plus dues for the billed months plus annual fees plus expected use costs. Over several years, pay the initiation fee once. Divide the total by realistic outings during that same period. Do not divide by an aspirational number of trips that reservations, weather or your calendar make unlikely.
A clearly hypothetical example
Illustration only—not a club quote: $4,000 initiation + $350 monthly dues for 12 months + $300 annual fees + $900 annual fuel equals $9,400 in year one. At 18 outings, that is about $522 per outing. Over three identical years it totals $20,200, or about $374 per outing over 54 outings. Your actual prices, season and usage may differ.
A cheaper plan can buy less useful access
Compare weekday and full-access plans against the days you can boat. Ask to see current Saturday availability for a boat that fits your guests. Check whether a watersports boat, a second captain or reciprocal travel requires a different tier. A club-managed insurance policy does not by itself tell you your damage exposure.
Get comparable written offers
Send each local club the same boating scenario and request the answers below in writing. Keep the initial offer before any negotiation; savings should be measured against that same consumer’s actual offer.
- What are the initiation fee, recurring dues, taxes and mandatory extras for this named plan?
- Which days, home marinas, boats and captains are included? Show availability for my normal weekend window.
- How many future reservations can I hold, and what are the holiday, late-return and cancellation rules?
- How is fuel billed? What insurance is provided, what exclusions apply, and what is my maximum damage responsibility?
- What is the minimum term, renewal date, cancellation notice and freeze policy? Are reciprocal bookings included?

Questions before you join
Are published prices binding quotes?
No. A public plan description may have taxes, eligibility rules or an expiration date. Obtain a dated offer identifying the home marina, plan and complete charges.
Does a club always cost less than ownership?
No. Purchase price, resale value, operating costs and actual usage can change the result. Compare the same years and outings, and consider access restrictions as well as money.
