BoatUS Foundation
A direct link to your state’s course options
The Foundation’s California page explains its course offering and whether it satisfies mandatory education. A course being available is not proof that it meets your state’s requirements.

Visiting, renting or using a reciprocal club?
Before boating in California, ask the state authority whether your existing out-of-state certificate is accepted for your age, vessel and length of stay.
Rental or temporary-certificate provisions may differ from ordinary operation. Do not assume a boat club membership qualifies for a rental exemption, or that one course meets every state’s requirements.
Questions for your local club
- Which certificate, card or license must each operator show?
- What on-water training and local checkout must I complete?
- Are there separate rules for younger operators, personal watercraft or additional captains?
- What operating area and weather limits apply to my intended route?
- Do reciprocal locations require extra instruction or documents?
