Your guide to boating
safety in Nevada.

Understand the certificate or license requirements, choose your course, and prepare for your first day at the dock.

The starting requirements

Do I need a boating license?

NDOW requires boaters born on or after January 1, 1983 to complete approved boating education for operation on interstate waters. Confirm the specific vessel and horsepower provisions with NDOW before operating; the agency recommends education for everyone.

Your paperwork

The card or certificate

Complete an NDOW-approved course and obtain the education card; review the current course list.

People often call this a “boating license,” but education certificates, operator licenses and boat registration are different. Check which documents apply to you and which must be carried aboard.

How to get started in Nevada

01 / Choose your course

Verify approval before enrolling.

Use the state’s current education information to confirm approved providers, online or classroom formats, minimum ages and any supervised examination.

Official education information ↗

02 / Complete the process

Check what happens after the test.

Confirm whether you receive a certificate immediately or must apply for a permanent card or license. Check processing time, state charges and the expiration of any temporary document.

03 / Get ready locally

Arrange your on-water checkout.

For Tahoe or Colorado River system outings, ask which state rules, inspection procedures and operating boundaries apply.

Club training and local qualification are separate from the state education requirement.

BoatUS Foundation

A direct link to your state’s course options

The Foundation’s Nevada page explains its course offering and whether it satisfies mandatory education. A course being available is not proof that it meets your state’s requirements.

Visiting, renting or using a reciprocal club?

Before boating in Nevada, ask the state authority whether your existing out-of-state certificate is accepted for your age, vessel and length of stay.

Rental or temporary-certificate provisions may differ from ordinary operation. Do not assume a boat club membership qualifies for a rental exemption, or that one course meets every state’s requirements.

Questions for your local club

  • Which certificate, card or license must each operator show?
  • What on-water training and local checkout must I complete?
  • Are there separate rules for younger operators, personal watercraft or additional captains?
  • What operating area and weather limits apply to my intended route?
  • Do reciprocal locations require extra instruction or documents?
This guide is an educational starting point, not a complete list of exceptions or legal or boating-safety advice. Confirm current requirements with the official authority and qualified instructors before operating.
